May is Bike Month!
May is Bike Month!
The first Bike to Work Day was organized by the League in 1956 and has expanded into Bike to Work Week and National Bike Month. The Driftless Region Bicycle Coalition (DRBC) continues this tradition by hosting Bike to Work Week events in the Driftless Region. The DRBC will be celebrating Bike to Work week this year from May 15-21.
At the request of the Driftless Region Bicycle Coalition the Governor of Wisconsin and the Mayor of La Crosse have both issues proclamations declaring May Bike month. The County of La Crosse and the City of Onalaska are expected to be issuing similar proclamation in the coming week or so. This show of support by our governmental leaders at multiple levels is encouraging and marks the start of the most ambitious Bike to Work Week in our areas history.
There are so many activities going on in multiple communities this year that we have created a sub-site just for Bike to Work information here: wwwdriftlessbicycle.org/biketowork. Check it out and you will find the full event schedule, plus lots of information on how to get yourself, your employer or organization involved. There will also be downloadable flyers and posters that you can print off to help spread the word. We are still adding content, so keep checking back often!
This year’s Bike to Work launch will be in Riverside Park in La Crosse on Saturday May 15, 1pm. There will be all kinds of fun, exciting and educational opportunities for all ages. This is actually preceded by a ride with the mayor in Onalaska (See the Schedule for details). Sunday is a Bicyclist Block Party in Myrick Park with live music and the fun does not stop all week long!
We are also looking for volunteers to help out, especially on Saturday the 15th. Please contact us if you are free. Want to have Bike to Work Week events in your community? The DRBC is looking to expand into other Driftless Region communities next year and we need your support and membership to make that happen. Join today and let us know what you think.
We look forward to seeing you there! Ride your bike.
