First Annual La Crosse Bike Swap

For the first time, the Wisconsin Bike Fed will co-host a Bike Swap in La Crosse in partnership with Logan Bike Works, and after-school bike program for students. If you have old bikes, parts, accessories or cycling clothing gathering dust in your basement, why not bring them to the 1st Annual La Crosse Bike Swap and turn them into cash. If you are looking for anything, this is your chance to pick it up at pennies on the dollar.

For years people in La Crosse had to drive to the Twin Cities, Madison or Milwaukee to experience a bike swap. We feel the Driftless Region has enough of a cycling culture to support our own swap meet, and we couldn’t have a better partner than the kids at Logan Bike Works, an after-school program where middle school students can learn bicycle maintenance skills and bicycle safety and earn a bicycle.February 23rd 10 am -2 pm

If all you want to do is sell a bike or two, you don’t need to pay for a table. Just come on the day of the swap, and pay $5 to put each bike in our bike corral. Include your mobile phone number or a description of yourself so anyone interested in your bike can get in touch with you while you shop. Any bikes left at 2pm will be donated to Logan Bike Works. Bike Winter in La Crosse

A second season of Bike Winter activities is quickly approaching. Thanks to the generosity of many businesses, we were able to organize some really fun events. Make sure to join us to celebrate riding a bike this winter.Click here to see a full list of events.

This year’s events will begin with on Sunday, February 10th at 1 pm with an urban bike ride, starting at the La Crosse Visitors Bureau. The ride will take in some of the best views from the city’s bike trails and continue at a casual pace with stops along the way for food and beverages.

Wednesday, February 13th 6 pm, cyclists can pedal to the Pearl Street Brewery for a free pint and basic winter maintenance tips to keep your bike rolling through the winter.

Friday, February 15th, ride to the Wine Guyz for a Bike Winter party after work. There will be free appetizers for the party between 4:30 -6:30. Last winter’s party was so well attended, we decided to return to the same venue and give bicyclists a chance to gather after work and enjoy some great conversation in a beautiful spot.

Sunday, February 17th 1 pm, bicyclists will gather at Earl’s Grocery and Saloon for a Fashion Social. Come share your ideas about what keeps you warm as you continue to ride through the winter season. In this casual atmosphere, we can enjoy beer, peanuts, and pizza as we share clothing choices for winter riding. Click here to see a list of the events.

City of La Crosse adopts Bicycle Pedestrian Master Plan

The city of La Crosse adopted a Bike/Ped Master Plan November 8th with a vote of 17-0. The process included the work of a steering committee, bicycle and pedestrian workshops in the community, public informational meetings and the work of city staff, T.Y. Lin and International and Yaggy Colby. The result is a document which gives bicyclists and pedestrians hope for more comfortable infrastructure in the city.

With $50,000 in 2013 Capital Budget for implementation, the next step is to form a permanent committee and designate a Bike Ped Coordinator. The following is an abbreviated list of recommendations in the plan:

Identify critical pedestrian crossing and improve with pavement markings, signs, and traffic control devices.
Reduce travel speed on Losey Boulevard and West Avenue to the speed limit
Begin work to create new Bike Boulevards on 17th Street and Farnam Street
Continue planning for a continuous Riverfront Trail
Complete a connected network of on-street bicycle facilities and directional signs in the heart of La Crosse.

Onalaska City Council Passes Complete Streets Policy

Tuesday, October 9, 2012 on a roll call vote of 4-2, the city council of Onalaska, Wisconsin adopted a Complete Streets policy and a recommended project checklist. The checklist asks project managers about accommodations for people walking and bicycling and encourages them to check existing plans and nearby destinations when making decisions. This concluded over a year’s worth of grassroots efforts by OnaBike and residents of Onalaska that supported the concept and vision of Complete Streets. Special thanks to Deena Murphy who caught the vision and labored to help draft the policy, work with city staff, and brought stakeholders to the table to help craft the final draft of the policy. The unique part of the policy is the checklist that is to be used to add a step of consistency with planning transportation projects.

Onalaska City Council Meeting to Consider Complete Streets

Greetings All,

This Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at 7:00 PM should be the capstone event for the Complete Streets Policy adoption with the city of Onalaska. The city council will make their vote. There is always a possibility of : need for edits, disagreements over certain provisions, or????, but for the most part we expect a close to unanimous passage of the policy. Currently, the Planning Commission has passed it and the policy was sent to the city lawyer for application of any necessary legalese.

It would be great to see as many faces as possible in the audience showing the Onalaska city council the support for this policy. Your support has and is greatly appreciated. Onalaska city council meets at Onalaska City Hall,415 Main Street, Onalaska.

The Wisconsin Bike Fed is hosting five Fed Fests across the state this fall as a chance to ride, enjoy some food and beverages and celebrate what we love about bicycling in our state. Join us in Appleton, Eau Claire, La Crosse, Madison, or Milwaukee. The Bike Fed inspires, motivates, and unites a strong and diverse community to move bicycling forward in Wisconsin. We couldn’t be happier to team up with our bicycling friends around the state to celebrate biking at Fed Fest!

Bicycle leaders from the community will lead a series of rides for every ability and rally back at the Bodega for refreshments and good cheer. The ride end/party will include beer, door prizes, and conversation. New Belgium will be on special and food will be available for purchase.
